CLASS (Children Learning At Sunbury Shores) - 2010 /2011 School Year
The CLASS Program is in its 6th Year!
Thanks to the generosity of several foundations, businesses and organizations, Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre is pleased to offer regular FREE art instruction for students in our area during the school year, during school hours.
In partnership with The Kiwanis Club of St. Andrews, the Tecolote, Harrison McCain, Sir James Dunn and Fundy Community foundations, and the Arts Branch, New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport, Sunbury Shores launched the CLASS (Children Learning At Sunbury Shores) Program in September, 2005. Now in it's sixth year, the program is still going strong.
This program involves every kindergarten to grade 6 student from Vincent Massey Elementary School, all grade 7, 8, 9 students and around thirty grade 11 and 12 credit students from Sir James Dunn Academy, taking part in art and nature classes on our premises or in their classrooms, during regular school time with instruction being given by artists and naturalists from the community. Because of St. Andrews' small population, funding for art teachers within the elementary, middle and high schools is just not a possibility. This is why the CLASS Program is so important for our area.
Kindergarten - Grade 3 classes are held at Vincent Massey Elementary School, as part of the CLASS outreach program. Grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 travel to Sunbury Shores once a week.
The Centre is also delighted to offer a Credit course for students in Grades 11 and 12. Working with local instructors Robert Van de Peer and Chantal Vincent, students achieve the hours of instruction needed to gain an art credit towards their diplomas.
In 2007, all students at Deer Island Community School (K-8) also benefited from the CLASS program as an instructor visited the island on a regular basis to teach art to children there.
In 2009/10, all students at Lawrence Station Elementary School benefited as well. In addition, from 2005-2007, youth at risk from St. Stephen and St. George traveled to Sunbury Shores to take part in the program.
