PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN PASTEL OR OIL
August 18-22, 2008
Michael Chesley Johnson, PSA, PANM
In this week-long plein air landscape workshop, Michael demonstrates a variety of materials and techniques and explores methods for abstracting the landscape with intuitive, expressive color. Each day starts with a lecture and demonstration, followed by plenty of time for student work. Michael gives personal attention at the easel, complete with helpful tips and suggestions. Each day will end with a critique. He covers plein air equipment and techniques and shares his expertise for successful outdoor painting. He teaches you how to mass the landscape into value groups and to use this as a foundation for your work. He covers the uses of local and reflected colour, and shows how you can achieve believable landscapes through atmosphere, colour harmony and dominances. Weather permitting, the class will paint on-location, otherwise be prepared to paint from photos in the studio. We'll paint all day, so bring a bag lunch. The workshop is for every level of student, from beginner to advanced in Pastel or Oil.
