IF IT CAN'T BE GROWN, IT MUST BE MINED - Field Trip
July 26, 2008 (9:00 PM - 4:30 PM)
Dr. Leigh Smith (Geologist) and David Stevens (Prospector)
Did you know that indium is an absolutely essential component in our computers and makes today's solar panels highly efficient, or that 600 pounds of cobalt is required for every jet engine? The diverse geologic history of Charlotte County has produced a rich array of mineral occurrences containing these and other elements. Learn about our mineral deposits, including the exciting new discoveries containing indium at Mount Pleasant, gold at Clarence Stream and nickel in St. Stephen to name just a few. Come with us as we go visit and sample a few of these intriguing sites! Leigh and Dave will make the connections between these and other minerals and their uses in our society and you will come to understand how these natural resources fundamentally support our lifestyle. Appropriate footwear and clothing and bringing your lunch are recommended.
