Gulf of Maine Visionary Award 2006

Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre Receives
VISIONARY AWARD
Presented by:

June, 7, 2006 - Portland, Maine

The Award is on display in our Exhbition Gallery

It features the following Citation:

"Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre is a distinctive and remarkable centre where the public can explore nature through arts and the natural environment. Since 1964, Sunbury Shores' unique mandate has been to explore the connections between these two disciplines. This is achieved through an arts program that utilizes the rich natural environment of the southwestern region of New Brunswick as a source of artistic inspiration and nature exploration.

"Since 2005, Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre, in partnership with local service groups and foundations, has provided art instruction at the Centre for school students in the St. Andrews area. The instructors-professional artists, artisans, crafts people and naturalists-are well known both in their fields of expertise and as educators.

"The Centre also provides programs to educate the public at large about the natural environment, the coastal area, protection of the environment and the visual arts. Nature programs, field trips and lectures are provided to local school classes and the public through the Centre’s outreach program. The Centre conducts field trips of Two Meadows Nature Trail, owned and maintained by the Centre, providing understanding of ecological features including flora and fauna. In the past, research has been conducted on flora found along the trail. Sunbury Shores’ also maintains useful collections of plants, animals and geological specimens.

"By expanding knowledge and appreciation of the environment and stewardship, Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre has made a significant contribution to the health of local communities in Passamaquoddy Bay, the Bay of Fundy and the Gulf of Maine".

The Area covered by the Gulf of Maine includes the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia; and the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
