Mapping Our Worlds
A joint exhibition with Ann Manuel & Robert Van de Peer
When presented with an exhibition titled “Mapping Our Worlds,” most people wouldn’t know what to expect without seeing the work. Their minds might start to race with visions of all the sorts of maps they have seen: nautical, topographical, highway, Google, Mapquest, treasure, the one we’ve all drawn on a napkin at one point or another. But all of these maps are used for directions, to plot a course for a journey or to find your way once lost. Although Manuel has used maps in some of her recent work these aren’t exactly the types of maps that she and Van de Peer are talking about in this exhibition. Their work is a map of where they have been. It shows conversations that they have had, people they have seen, and events they have experienced. The artwork is their interpretation of these events and experiences. This makes their work a map of them as artists. This exhibition is like a section of their respective maps, C10 for example. It is a close up of the maps that they are creating for themselves and for the generations to come.
Van de Peer’s use of non-toxic chemicals in his printmaking practice makes his prints unique among printmakers. He has also perfected a way to create lovely washes in his prints, which is of particular challenge in this medium. It lends itself very well to his images that are so closely tied to the sea and adds to the energy of his images.
Manuel’s use of line is all about the details. When looking closely at some of her landscapes it is possible to discern words and body parts. It is these layers of figures and text that build to reveal wondrous landscapes.
Although their work is very different these two artists do use conventions that bring their work together. They both have ties to landscape and work through their own relationships with these landscapes. There are references to grids, which brings the imagery back to the idea of making a map. In this exhibition, Manuel and Van de Peer are showing work that will be a section of the map that is their careers.

GRAND MANAN - 1930
The photographs of George Daniell
When: October 4 to November 3
Opening Reception: October 4: 5pm - 7pm (
Salon Concert to follow at 7pm)
Background Information:
George Daniell, an outstanding artist of international
stature, born and raised in Yonkers, is the artist behind the photographs of
Sunbury Shores' Arts and Nature Centre's upcoming gallery exhibit Grand
Manan 1930 - The Work of George Daniell. The photographs are from the
permanent collection of the Tides Institute Museum and Gallery in Eastport,
Maine. Sunbury Shores and the Tides Institute are embarking on what they
hope to be a great new relationship of arts and culture in the Quoddy
Region.
Renown Maine art critic Carl Little ascribes to Daniell a democratic vision.
He points out that among his strongest images of humanity are photographs he
took in 1938 of herring fishermen on Grand Manan Island, off the coast of
New Brunswick . Nineteen of these photographs make up this latest Sunbury
Shores exhibit.
The Grand Manan photographs were taken in the depths of the Great
Depression. Yet, as Carl Little points out, these photographs have a
pleasant, healthy, lively quality. Even though the subjects are living in
difficult circumstances, Daniell conveys their dignity and hope.
A considerable amount has been written about the importance of Daniell's
photographic portraits. In a The New York Times feature in 2001, Bruce
Weber, a leading fashion photographer and film maker said, "I have always
loved Daniell's photographs. They have a spark and a sense of humor that is
very human."
The following year Weber republished 16 of Daniell's historic 1930s Yonkers,
Hudson River portraits in his book, All American Stories which created a
flurry of interest in this period of Daniell's work.
