Summer 2010
GRAPHIC STORYTELLING
August 2-6, 2010
Emily Flake
Delve into the popular process of telling stories through images by spending a week with a New Yorker cartoonist. The course will include an overview of drawn narratives from comic books to the contemporary graphic novel form. You will explore the process of conceptualizing a coherent theme. Practical drawing exercises will then reveal sequential art techniques, which enable images to convey a story line. By week’s end each student will complete a three-page story of his/her own. Whether you are a published cartoonist or illustrator with a novel tucked away in the back of your brain, or just curious to try something new, everyone is welcome.
