SKETCHING IN WATERCOLOURS AND PAINTING IN OILS

August 11-15, 2008

Vaughn Butland

This workshop will focus on using watercolour as a sketching medium to be later transformed into a finished oil painting. You will work outside weather permitting, taking advantage of the varied land and seascapes of the area. Mornings will start with demonstrations by the instructor followed by hands on by the students outside. Vaughn will be with you at every step and when you return to the studio you will continue to paint, evaluate and critique your work. Your tools will be atmosphere, colour and drama. You will also deal with sketching in oil and the methods of the impressionists who were instrumental in taking the artist into the landscape. Those who wish to work only in oil or only in watercolour may do so as the workshop is about painting not about the medium. Open to all levels from beginner to advanced. Wear the appropriate clothing and come with an open mind ready to enjoy and get close to nature, as she is your best teacher - we just have to stop, look and listen.

Fee: $375 plus HST Member / $400 plus HST Non Member

Vaughn Butland

Vaughn Butland's first formal instruction began in Moncton, NB when, at 12 years of age, he was enrolled in Ms. Ritchie's drawing and painting class. Ms. Ritchie had studied under Arthur Lismer and J. E. H. McDonald of the Group of Seven and she strongly believed that wherever art takes one, one must have the basic skills of perspective, proportion and drawing to succeed. This strong classical base proved to be of great value during Vaughn’s fine art training at the Ecolé Des Beaux Arts in Montreal. His formal training led to a successful career in commercial art and advertising and other business ventures, including imports, building design, and construction supplies. In 1984 Vaughn began painting full time. He has completed private corporate commissions and his works are held in private and corporate collections across Canada and the U.S. In addition, Vaughn has hosted a weekly TV program titled "Sketching in Watercolour" and has taught in both Canada and the U.S. Since 1973, Vaughn has resided in Kamloops, BC while maintaining a New Brunswick presence in Alma, NB.
